The Palace of Westminster

Hello everyone!

I haven't been to any English-speaking country yet, so I've chosen one of the monuments I'd like to visit which is the Palace of Westminster.

The Palace of Westminster is also known as the Houses of Parliament since it is the place where the House of Lords and the House of Commons meet. It lies on the north bank of the river Thames, in the City of Westminster (London).

There are two structures: The Old Palace, a medieval building (11th century) most of which was destroyed due to the fire in 1834; and New Palace that replaced the previous one and stands nowadays.

Moreover, the first palace was the London residence of the King of England until a fire ravaged part of the building in 1512. Therelater, it served as the home of Parliament and the seat of the Royal Courts of Justice. In addition, many years later, exactly in 1814, a greater fire destroyed the rebuilt Houses of Parliament and the only structures that survived were Westminster Hall, the Cloisters of St. Stephen's, the Chapel of St. Mary Undercroft and the Jewel Tower.

On the other hand, the Palace of Westminster has several towers. The largest and the tallest one is the Victoria Tower with 98.5 metres and occupies the south-western corner of the Palace. Likewise, the most famous tower is the Clock Tower, commonly known as Big Ben and with 96 metres, is situated at the north end of the Palace. On the contrary, the shortest one is the Central Tower with 91 metres and stands over the middle of the building.

From my point of view, I think this is an amazing building and I'd like so much to visit it!
