Hello everyone!
Since my
experiences on British soil are limited to the inside of Gatwick Airport, I
have chosen to talk a bit about a not so glamorous piece of rock that also
happens to be a monument of one of the greatest battles ever to have been
fought in England: The Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066. The Kingdom of
England, under the lead of King Harold Godwinson won a significant battle
against Harald Hårdråde of Norway and Godwinsons brother, Earl Tostig of
Orkney. However, the sweet scent of victory was shorthold for Harald Godwinson
and only a few weeks later he died in the Battle of Hastings, when William the
Conqueror swooped in and laid hands on the crown.
This monument has been raised in the village of Stamford
Bridge.
The inscription reads:
1066
The Battle of Stamford Bridge
King Harold of England defeated his brother Tostig and Harald Hardraada of Norway here on 25 September 1066

After Edward the Confessor died, there were several claimants to the throne, back in 1066.
More about this in a few classess!
Thanks for the intro!
